Life

I know, I haven't posted in a long time. Nothing overly exciting has happened lately.
Beth had a field trip, but I forgot my camera. Beth takes gymnastics once a week and is really improving in her skills. Jacob is signed up for a soccer camp twice a week in May, and he can hardly stand the wait. They are both rocking and rolling in their AWANA club for church. I am amazed at how many scriptures they learn and retain. Spring Break is next week, and we'll have some fun stuff to do. Hopefully, I'll remember to take my camera along.
Kevin is busy as usual with work. I completed my participation in the spring Just Between Friends consignment sale. I am getting into spring cleaning- hard work but feels so good to have a major task accomplished, a part at a time (baseboards and fans today, windows and blinds next week). I'm doing some re-organization of closets and toys. I also completed all the digital scrapbook pages for our 2010 Disney World trip. I had a marathon weekend, completing 17 pages. I haven't scrapbooked since- got a bit burned out. I still have to finish ordering the pages, but I'm loving the way it's coming together in the album so far. Here's a peek at a few of the last pages:

Interesting statistics

Being the math nerd that I am, I enjoy reading statistics. This month, Parents magazine had an interesting article about the changing households in America. It was interesting and thought provoking enough to me that I thought I'd share.

Just in case you need clarification on what these really mean (I did):
Millennials are basically the kids (now adults) born in the 1980s and 90s.
GenXers are those born in the 1960s and 70s.

~Millennials (53%) and GenXers (57%) are less likely than older generations (75% of those over 65) to say a child needs a home with both parents.

~44% of Millenials says marriage is obsolete, 37% of those over age 30 think the same

~21% of households are married couples with children compared to 43% in 1950.

~23% of homes with a stay-at-home mom (for married couples with children under 15)

~10% of children under age 18 live in a home with a grandparent. Of those, 22% don't have a parent in that same household.

~More than half of moms say their kids have a better lifestlye than they themselves did growing up

What does all this say about our society? What does this mean for the future of our families? Is giving our kids a "better" lifestyle than we had growing up worth the destruction of the basic family structure? What values and ethics are being taught? Is a committment valuable anymore?

I know what I think. Tell me what you think about it.

Prayer Changes Things

Ages ago, I got this email thing about praying for my children. I printed it, tucked it into my Bible and then just passed over it once in a while. One of my goals for 2011 is to spend more time in prayer, talking to God about the desires and concerns of my heart. I pulled out this little thing, so glad that I kept it. Going by the date on the calendar, I pray that same one from the chart. It's been something lately as I pray for my children and realize I desire these same things for my own life. We're always growing and changing, hopefully in a good way. Praying for those changes, God will grant the desires of your heart. He may teach a hard lesson along the way to get that growth out of you, but He's faithful and loving. He is our Heavenly Father, having adopted us into His family when we accept Him as Savior. As adopted children, we know we are wanted and chosen. How awesome is that! As a parent, I can relate so much more to seeing God as my Father. A parent wants to give their child the best they can, a child wants to make their parent proud. I hope that I please my Father God in my actions. This little list is certainly a reminder of the things God, my Father, desires in me. I hope you will join me in praying these things for your children (and even for yourself).
1- SALVATION Lord, I pray that my children would obtain salvation that is in Christ, with eternal glory (2 Timothy 2:10, Acts 16:31)
2- GOD'S GRACE I pray that my children may grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior (2 Peter 3:18)
3- LOVE Father, grant that my children would learn to live a life of love, through the Spirit that is in them (Ephesians 5:2)
4- INTEGRITY Lord, may integrity and uprighteousness protect my children because their hope is in you (Psalm 25:21)
5- SELF-CONTROL Father, help my children not be like many others, but to be alert and self-controlled in all they do (1 Thessalonians 5:6)
6- LOVE FOR GOD'S WORD Lord, may my children regard your Word as more precious than gold and sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:10)
7- JUSTICE God, help my children to love justice as You do and act justly in all they do, all the while not passing judgement on others (Psalm 11: 7, Micah 6:8)
8- MERCY Oh Father, grant that my children would be full of mercy and compassion as You are, Lord (James 5:11)
9- RESPECT Lord, help my children to show proper respect to everyone, as your Word commands (1 Peter 2:17)
10- SELF-ESTEEM God, help my children develop a strong self-esteem, rooted in the realization that they are Your workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)
11- FAITHFULNESS Let faithfulness never leave my children, but bind this virtue around their necks (Proverbs 3:3)
12- COURAGE Lord, may my children always be strong and courageous in their character and their actions (Deuteronomy 31:6)
13- PURITY Create in my children pure hearts, O God, and let that purity of their heart be evident in their lives (Psalm 51:10)
14- KINDNESS Father, I pray that my children would be kind to each other and everyone they meet (1 Thessalonians 5:15)
15- GENEROSITY Lord, I pray that my children will be rich in good deeds, generous and willing to share (1 Timothy 6:18)
16- PEACE LOVING Father God, help my children make every effort to do what leads to peace (Romans 14:19)
17- JOY Heavenly Father, grant that my children would be filled with the joy given by the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 1:6)
18- PERSEVERANCE Lord, teach my children to persevere in all they do, help them run with perseverance the race set before them (Hebrews 12:1)
19- HUMILITY God, please cultivate in my children the ability to show true humility toward all and about all (Titus 3:2)
20- COMPASSION Holy Father, I pray that You would clothe my children with the virtue of compassion (Colossians 3:2)
21- RESPONSIBILITY Lord, grant that my children would learn to be responsible, for each one should carry his own load (Galatians 6:5)
22- CONTENTMENT Father, teach my children the secret of being content in every situation, through Him who gives them strength (Phillipians 4:12-13)
23- FAITH Lord, help my children to fight the good fight of faith, taking hold of the eternal life to which they were called (1 Timothy 6:12)
24- A SERVANT'S HEART God, help my children develop servant's hearts, that they may serve wholeheartedly (Ephesians 6:7)
25- HOPE God of hope, grant that my children may overflow with hope and hopefulness by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13)
26- PATIENCE God, strengthen my children with all power, so that they may have great endurance and patience with all people and situations they come across (Galatians 5:22)
27- PASSION FOR THE LORD Lord, I pray that my children's souls would pant for you as the deer pants for streams of water (Psalm 42:1)
28- WISDOM Father, I pray my children wold ask and that you would generously give wisdom to them as you promise (James 1:5)
29- PRAYERFULNESS I ask that my children be committed to prayer, and not faint, lose heart or give up (Luke 18:1)
30- GRATITUDE Lord, help my children to live lives that overflow with thankfulness, always giving thanks to You (Ephesians 5:20)
31- BOLDNESS I pray that my children would fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel of Christ Jesus, that their lives and words speak for God (Ephesians 6:19)

I hope you will join me on the journey this year, of praying daily for our children. Nothing but good can come of it!

What to do???????

The kids have been shipped off to Popi and Yaya's house for a week. Then, I'll go down to spend a long weekend visiting and drive home with the kids. This is the first time EVER we've been at home without the kids. It's wonderfully quiet!

What are our big plans? Whatever we want! We've already had a hot date out to dinner then grocery shopping at Walmart. See, exciting stuff, huh? Other plans this week:
- catch up on blogs
- clean out the kids' rooms
- regular house chores- laundry, bathrooms, floors, dusting....
- errands, that I can run in half the time without kids and don't have to be back for naps
- exercise
- prep for Just Between Friends consignment sale
- read, maybe at the neighborhood pool
- scrapbook
- watch old movies
But, it will blissfully be done in my time, without extra voices and whining (maybe a little from Kevin).

This is good stuff. Thanks Popi and Yaya!

Stand Up

This is another great church bulletin thing from Father's Day. I just love stories like this!

Jack Eckerd was a businesmann, the founder of Eckerd Drug stores. In the 1980s, he became a Christian thanks to a friend, Chuck Colson. After his conversion, he walked into one of his stores, down the books and magazines aisle. The first thing that caught his eye- Playboy and Penthouse magazines. When he went back to his office, he called the president of the comany and said, "Take those magazines out of the stores." The president reminded Eckerd that those magazines make the company $3 million a year. Still, Eckerd wanted them out. So, in 1700 stores across America, by one man's decision, those magazines were removed. His heart was truly changed by Christ. His friend Colson called him and asked to use the story. He asked Eckerd, "Did you do that because of your commitment to Christ?" Eckerd replied, "Why else would I give away $3 million? The Lord wouldn't let me off the hook." Eckerd later wrote letters to all the drugstore operators, all the other chains and requested they also remove such magazines from their stores. Not one person answered him. He wrote more letters. Meanwhile, Eckerd stores had more customers, simply because the pornographic magazines were gone. Other stores took notice and removed them as well. All the while, the presidential porography commission was meeting in Washington, debating what to do, trying to develop recommendations for the president to consider stemming the tide of pornography. During this, 5000 7-11 stores also removed the magazines. The chairman of 7-11 happened to sit on Eckerd's board of directors and gave into the requests to pull the magazines. In a period of 12 months, 11,000 retail stores in America removed Playboy and Penthouse. They didn't do it because of a law, but because one man was committed to honoring Christ.
~ paraphrased

Whether it be Christian convictions or environmental rights or whatever we feel stongly about, how often do we really stand up for it? Do we keep it to ourselves, just living our lives? Or do we hold someone accountable for their choices too? Do we think we can't make a change in this world because we're just a regular person? Are we too scared of what people will think to do what we know is right?

I'm trying to live my life in such a way that is honoring to God. But, I'm human, and I sometimes fail Him. In my human-ness, I've hurt people's feelings. I've been scrutinized unfairly because I profess to be a Christian. People forget Christians aren't perfect. I'm going to keep doing what I know is right, trying to honor God in my words and my actions. I'm going to stand up for what I believe in. I'm going to make choices that show I won't compromise my beliefs. I want my family and my God to be proud of me.

What will you stand up for?

Wisdom at our fingertips

I got this video by email, and I must say it is worth sharing. So, instead of a forward to everyone in my address book, I hope that those and some strangers will see this and be as amazed as I am.

I'm glad I've found my partner in Kevin. I'm glad my parents and sibling are seperate yet still close enough to be connected to me. My precious children will one day be seperate, but I'm enjoying all they have to offer me right now!

Worth our time

I pulled an article out of a parenting magazing about a year ago and just rediscovered it. I thought it's wisdom worth sharing. I know I sometimes let the chores of being the mom take over the joys of being a mom. I'm working to refocus my daily goals (but still keep a clean house). I really enjoy being a stay at home mom, but too many times I've said "later" or "tomorrow" when I should have dropped what I was doing to enjoy that moment. Now, those moments are fewer as Beth is about to head off to school every day. I want to keep these bits of wisdom in the forefront of my mind to make all these moments count. I know before long they'll both be at school, then before I can blink, they'll be out of the house. I hope I can encourage you to take the time to be the best parent you can be, enjoying all the moments you have!

1. Play with your children. Let them choose.
2. Take charge. Show your love by setting boundaries.
3. Eat at least one meal as a family each day.
4. Give your children responsibilities. It's good for their self-esteem and your sanity!
5. Read books together every day.
6. Love your children equally but treat them uniquely.
7. Be the role model your children deserve.
8. Always tell the truth.
9. Say "I love you" whenever you feel it, even if it's 654 times a day.
10. Schedule special time together.
11. Talk about what it means to be a good person.
12. Kiss and hug your spouse in front of your kids.
13. Don't try to fix everything. Give them a chance to work it out.
14. Gossip good about your kids. What we overhear is more potent than what we're told.
15. Fess up when you blow it.
16. Be vigilant about safety.
17. Remember that discipline is not punishment. It's teaching them about how to behave in the world.
18. Every child is a treasure but no child is the center of the universe.
19. Explain to your kids why values are important. When you're kind, generous, honest and respectful, you make people around you feel good.
20. Make warm memories.
21. Pick your battles.
22. Encourage daddy time.
23. Don't accept disrespect from your child.
24. Ask your children three "you" questions every day, preferably without yes/no answers. "What did you do at school today?"
25. Savor the moments.

Enjoy your children today (and everyday!)

My eyes have seen (or not seen) new things

All my life, my church and school used the NIV (New International Version) translation of the Bible. Granted, that worked for me since it was realtively easy to read and understand. The church we currently attend uses KJV (King James Version). Sometimes the "thees" and "thous" make it hard to understand a verse, but I keep trying. In the last couple weeks, Preacher has mentioned in the sermoms a couple verses that are in KJV but don't appear in NIV. Finally, I took the time to look them up. Whoa! He wasn't kidding! Not that I doubted him, I'm just a see it myself kinda person. Are they in your Bible and what version do you use?

Matthew 17:21- "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting."
Acts 8:37- "And Pillip said, 'If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.' And he answered and said, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'"

What is the significance in leaving these out? What other ones have been left out? If the Bible is supposed to be infallible, why are there these errors? If this error happened in translation, then what is the true translation? Now, I'm not questioning God, I'm questioning the errors of humans. Some friends told me about a couple books that go into more detail about what's missing with the NIV. I plan to get these books and read them before long. The books? If the Foundations be Destroyed- by Chick Salisby and I can't find where I wrote the other one down.

BUSY

I know, what's new? You want stories and pictures. Ok, so really only my parents and sister care that I haven't updated lately. I don't have a clue where this week went. I never seem to have enough time in a day! I assure you that I have lots of posts to come. I promise to spend time on those this week. Really. Here's my blog plan: Beth's fabulous room with the fabulous canvas painting I won, 2 zoo trips, more time back "home" with family, Father's Day.....
So, until then, I have chores to do :)

Oh the things you can see

While "vacationing" at my parents, I've seen some interesting things, so I thought I'd make it my randomness this week.

1. How can people get into an accident on the freeway? I mean, isn't everyone going the same direction, at about the same speed? So, then, why did I see two cars that managed to be turned sideways, t-boned by yet another car? Yup, still haven't figured that out.
2. How can someone surf while smoking? Yup, saw that at the beach today. The guy also had a mullet hair-do, so it's not like he was making great choices :)
3. Why are there still blue Fema tarps on roofs, 10 months after hurricane Ike? Why hasn't Ike devestation and recovery gotten the media coverage it deserves? It just really saddens me that people still haven't gotten contractors to get roofs and homes repaired. Things have changed on the coast. Major landmarks have been forever altered- the 61st street McD was buldozed, among other places. SOOO many trees and plants never blosomed/bloomed. Usually, driving into Glaveston, there are beautiful oleander bushes, but not this time. I didn't drive around anymore.
4. Did you know that when a little boy eats a rock, he walks funny until he gets rid of it? Trust me on this one. Poor guy. I'd like to think he won't eat another rock, but I'm not counting on it.
5. Why is it okay to advertise, with large pictures, in store windows where people of all ages and both genders pass, gorgeous models in skimpy bras and panties? Isn't this essentially porn in any other media outlet? And yet, people turn the other cheek in the name of "advertising. What a shame!

Randomness, part 2

So, here I am again, with random thoughts in my head. Sometimes, more than one of these a day. Scary!

1. Am I wrong to be annoyed by whistling? I have always disliked whistling. Beth has learned how to whistle. This week, she's been whistling almost more than talking. That's ALOT. I want desperately to make her stop. But, I have to be a good mommy, encouraging her, telling her she's getting better and louder. And, maybe, just maybe, one day she can whistle like Yaya. Yaya has one of those whistles I could hear 5 houses away when I was playing, the whistle that told me "get home now, or else." I can't whistle, though Beth has tried to teach me. Maybe that's why I'm so annoyed.

2. How can potty humor be such a boy thing from so early? Jacob will toot/fart then tell me "poopoo". I ask if he's poopoo or just rooty-tooty. Then he'll say "tooty" and cover his mouth while laughing. Geez!

3. Can I buy a filter for my brain? I've realized lately that my mouth says or my fingers type things in my head, without really thinking through the words. I know it doesn't always come out the way it should. I'm working on it, though. If I've offended you along the way, I'm very sorry.

4. Why, the older I get, does my birthday turn into just another day, full of the same usual tasks, and it totally doesn't bother me? Birthdays used to be the best thing ever. Now, not so much. Not that I dread it, just don't really get worked up. The gifts are fabulous! Having someone else cook and clean is fantastic! Still, that's about all I need. This year, we have a day of church activities to attend, and I'm perfectly content. Life is good.

5. Why do my children wake up as soon as the sun is peeking over the horizon? Why can't I get to bed early enough to get enough sleep that their waking up early doesn't phase me? I'll get it figured out. Probably just in time for them to start sleeping late. :)

Randomness

So, I've been busy and not posting lately. Can you imagine, a stay at home mom, busy? And you just thought I sat around eating diet bon-bons! My precious friend Jeri does these random posts of 5 random thoughts in her head. I thought I'd give it a try.

1. Why do my inner thighs hurt after painting Beth's room? And why are my arms not sore? Maybe going up and down the ladder- which looks like a 90s paint splatter shirt after being used to paint every room ever painted in our homes over the last 9 years. See, my thoughts are totally going random here.

2. Who writes those stupid exercise commercials "in only 20 minutes a day"? Ok, let's think about this. 5 minutes to get dressed, 5 minutes to get set up, 20 minutes to to the dvd or whatever, 30 minutes for a shower and getting dressed again. That's an hour! Do you know how hard it is to find that hour of time in a day? Sure, my kids nap, but I also have to use that nap time for my quiet Bible study time, chores, phone calls that can't be made with noisy children in the room, picking up the morning round of toys... You get the idea. Anyway, point is, it's not just a simple 20 minute time slot!

3. Am I wrong to declare I don't actually like eating M&Ms? Don't get me wrong, I'll eat them. But, if I'm going to pick a chocolate treat, I don't even consider them. I prefer dark choc Milky Way, or Caramello, or Turtles, or chocolate covered cherries. Gee, I could really go for some chocolate right now.

4. If I had more than 24 hours in a day, would it be enough? I swear I make a list every day of the things I need to accomplish- events, errands, chores, various at-home tasks that I tend to forget. Really, I do make the list. I'm that anal-retentive organized. Then, inevitably, something doesn't get done. I don't know if I need an extra hour. I don't know if I need better time management. Oh, who cares! I can add it to tomorrow's list!

5. How does one little girl manage to go through so many outfits a day, some matching, some not. Then, what ends up in the laundry is the non-matching stuff, rendering the correct outfits useless for at least a week or so until all matching pieces have been worn, washed and make it back into the drawer/closet at the same time. So, um, I know we're halfway through May, but I'm finally getting around to these pics requested in early April. Sorry.

Beth showing off her birthday outfits from Aunt Casey. And then one of her dresses that Yaya sent, with a matching dress for the doll (which has also been worn by the duck, a bear and I think a puppy. She'd probably put it on her brother, too, if it fit.)

Expelled

A week or two ago, we watched a movie that some church friends told us about:

Can I just tell you that it is one of the most interesting, heart wrenching, fascinating things I have ever spent my time watching?!
Why, you ask? The movie/film is about the neverending debate of evolution vs intelligent design (which doesn't necessarily mean creation- though that's what I personally believe). More importantly, the film is about the lack of our nation's colleges, not to mention public schools, allowing professors and students the right to examine both sides. Scientists from all over the world, on both sides of the argument, give their opinion (which of course they believe is fact). Such great intelligent minds, it's a shame they can't be more open and willing to consider things. Look at how much science has changed in the last, heck, 10 years! Re-examining Darwin's theories (and they are just theories) with our new found scientific knowledge would be amazing, but they're not willing. It breaks my heart that students will miss out on seeing many sides of this debate because of the few in "power" in the scientific world.
We rented ours from Netflix, though I'm thinking about buying it.
I'd love to hear what you think about the movie. I'm even willing to listen to where you stand on the actual debate.
By the way, I once heard that late in his life, Darwin became a Christian and recounted his theories of evolution. Isn't that just something, of course left out of the textbooks.

Don't be a fool!

"A fool says in his heart there is no God"- Psalm 14:1
I find it ironic that today, April Fool's Day, is also National Atheist Day.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline"- Proverbs 1:7

While I don't scream my Christianity (maybe I should), I am a Christian. I'm so grateful to live in the United States, where I have the freedom to worship God. I'm so grateful for parents who raised me in church and who lived their lives as an example of Christianity (though I didn't always appreciate it).
I'm so glad I'm not a fool. I yearn for God's discipline so that I may gain more wisdom. I'm working on it.
If you want to know more about this loving, amazing, just God, ask me. I'm happy to share more. Have a blessed, wise day!

I'll be back

I'm busy. Too busy to even be here right now.
Saturday, I'm hosting a baby shower for a precious friend. I have lots of chores to do for that.

Monday starts JBF- the best way ever to get rid of all the things we accumulate by having kids. So, this is what my guest room looks like as I work on things- hanging, ironing as needed, pricing, tagging, sorting. All the clothes hanging in the closet, the 3 boxes/tubs by the window, ALL the piles on the bed.
I promise that after Monday, maybe Tuesday, I'll be back to blogging. And, boy, do I have lots to blog. With pictures.

The Shack

If you have not already, spend time with this book. It's so worth it! Some parts are a little tough to stomach, others can't be read when you're on the verge of falling asleep (they do require some processing), but the book is great! It has affirmed my faith in an amazing God. At the same time, it has challenged me to strive for better relationships- with God, my husband, my children, my family, my friends. I'm trying not to reveal the plot because I want you to find out for yourself. I am awed by this portrayal of God, our Papa, a loving, giving man, a true Father who gives us, His children, the opportunity of independence because he loves us, though he knows the consequences of some of our choices won't be good. (That was a horrible sentence, but it's just spilling from my heart to my fingers).

Here's a link to the website: http://theshackbook.com/index.html I bought my book at Mardels, and I have seen it for sale at Target. I was going to loan mine to my mom, but she bought her own. If you live close and want to borrow it, let me know!

Please let me know if you've read it or if you do. I'd love to know what you think.

Climb the Mountain

(copied from a bulletin board)
I tried to climb the mountain today. As I inched my way up the path, I felt out of breath and had to turn back.I tried to climb the mountain today. But, It was so hot outside, I thought I had better stay in my nice air-conditioned house and rest up for tomorrow's attempt.I tried to climb the mountain today. On my journey, darkness started to fall and I was full of fear, so I had to return to a safe place.I was ready to climb the mountain today. But I had so may other things to do, so instead of climbing the mountain I took care of the much more important tasks; I washed my car, mowed the grass and watched the big game. Today the mountain will have to wait.I was going to climb the mountain today. But as I stared at the mountain in all it's majestic beauty, I knew I had no chance of making it to the top, so I figured why even begin trying.I had forgotten about climbing the mountain today, until an old friend came by and asked what I was up to lately. I told him about all my plans to climb that mountain someday. I went on and on about how I was going to accomplish the task.He stopped me and said, "I just got back from climbing that mountain. for the longest time I told myself I was going to try to climb it but never made any progress.""I almost let the dream of making it to the top die. I came up with every excuse of why I could not make it up the mountain, but never once did I give myself a reason why I could. One day as I stared at the mountain and pondered, I realized that if I didn't make an attempt at this dream all my dreams would eventually die."" The next morning, I started my climb. It was not easy, and at times I wanted to quit. But no matter what I faced, I placed one foot in front of the other, keeping a steady pace. When the wind tried to blow me over the edge, I kept walking. When the voices inside my head screamed, stop! I focused on my goal, never letting it out of sight. I kept moving forward. I could not quit because I knew I had come too far to stop now. Time and time again, I reassured myself that I was going to finish this journey. I struggled mightily to make it to the top, but I CLIMBED THE MOUNTAIN.""I have to be going," my friend said. "Tomorrow is a new day to accomplish more dreams. By the way what are you going to do tomorrow?"I looked at him, with intensity and confidence in my eyes, and said, "I HAVE A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB."

What's your mountain?

Mine is this weight I keep trying, ok half trying, to lose. I WILL get it off and get in shape by summer. I want look good in a bikini!

Update, for now

Ok, so I was told I needed to update my blog. It's not like I've been to any foreign country or have an exciting new job to talk about. I spent 3 days cleaning my house between speding time with the kids. Yaya is coming today, flight delayed, but we're about to leave to get her. That's the most exciting thing in my life these days. We're going shopping and to get pedicures and to dinner and to hang out. I can't wait! :)

Until next time....
I do have something to update, with pictures, but I need more spare time.
